B-side of The Day Will Come

Also in contrast to the A-side, this one was actually co-written by Gorman, along with his friend and associate Brian Holland, his friend and associate Robert Bateman of the Satintones, and Hitsville receptionist Janie Bradford – some of the best songwriting talent in the Motown stable.

The result is a disappointingly straightforward rocker with little to commend it; opening with an unexpected guitar solo, it very quickly settles into a shuffling R&B/blues-influenced groove and then fails to go anywhere at all.

Promo label scan kindly provided by Gordon FrewinCertainly the material doesn’t show off Freddie’s voice with anything like the opportunities he had on the A-side, which is perhaps why this ended up on the flip. The chorus, in which all the music strips away and Gorman is left to intone just for you… Just for you acapella in his deepest baritone over some moody finger-clicking, is by far the best bit; there’s a perfunctory sax solo at 1:34 which brings a bit more colour to proceedings, and the band are clearly having fun, but there’s just not enough song here for them to get their teeth into.

The whole thing ends after just over two minutes of music, and feels even shorter than that; it’s over before it’s had a chance to get its hooks in. In Motown terms, it’s perhaps most reminiscent musically of the second version of the Miracles’ Shop Around, but nowhere near as memorable.

Freddie Gorman wouldn’t receive top billing on another Motown record, but he’d become one of the label’s more valued songwriters in the following couple of years before eventually winding up as a key member of the Originals.
