The Vells were an early line-up of the group that became Martha & the Vandellas, with Gloria Williamson on lead. The group never recorded under the name “Vells”; when Gloria quit the group, Motown opted to issue some old recordings featuring her vocals anyway, but to avoid confusion with the new Martha-led group they were released under a different (made-up) name.
