Andantes

** This is just a short biographical summary – for the full story, check out this artist’s reviews! **

Louvain Demps, Jackie Hicks and Marlene Barrow, the immortal Andantes, were probably the most prolific of all Motown artists – and yet maybe 1% of Motown fans recognise the names. The Andantes were the backing singers at Motown’s Hitsville USA studio, recording all the year round to provide backing vocals, as well as extra harmonies to sweeten (and in some cases, replace) the vocals the “name” artists had already laid down. They had just one single release as a credited artist in their own right, and even that featured outsider and future Marvelette Ann Bogan on lead rather than any of the full-time Andantes. But their true legacy – the thousands of Motown records to feature their voices (and special consideration here goes to the wonderful sound of the Andantes and the Four Tops, one of the greatest vocal mixes in Motown history) – will live forever.
