A blot on the CV of everyone concerned, this was still – incredibly – selected for inclusion on the Supremes’ first album Meet The Supremes later that year. They might have been better off simply leaving that space on the record blank, or printing up a bunch of speaker test signals or something. (1)
Pretty much the only good Supremes record to come out between their tentative, nervous first step I Want A Guy and the beginning of the HDH era towards the end of 1963. (7)
The song works well enough rearranged for a female vocal group – Flo, Mary and Barbara provide decent support for Ross as she struggles her way through the material – but it just doesn’t suit Ross’ voice, and (as was discussed when talking about the Miracles version) I really don’t think the song is anything special to begin with, despite the critical praise that has since been lavished on it. It’s an average B-side with a quite pretty tune, and no more than that. (4)
Poor Flo gamely gives it her best shot, interspersing the first line with a charming series of saucy, throaty giggles and delivering a really committed vocal performance, giving much better than the piss-poor material deserves, but it’s a hopeless battle; this record is an unsalvageable dud. (2)
Not as ambitious as I Want A Guy, it’s less experimental within its structure, a more straightforward slow-tempo 4/4 doo-wop – but it’s still really good. You feel it. And when all is said and done, what else do you want from a pop record? (9)
Immensely likeable, genuinely beautiful, and above all pants-wettingly good. Even if it sounds nothing like the Supremes everyone knows, it’s as good a début single as anyone, anywhere, has ever recorded. (10)
