Motown Junkies

Motown Junkies

Author Archives: The Nixon Administration

498. Stevie Wonder: “Tears In Vain”

July 2, 2012

A single-scoop serving of pleasing low-key balladry, and it’s obviously a decent song, but it’s got less to do with Stevie Wonder than anything since he dropped the “Little” from his name, and as such it needs to be seen as a step backwards, nice enough though it is. (5)

497. Stevie Wonder: “Pretty Little Angel”

June 30, 2012

It might sound like damning with faint praise to call this probably Stevie’s best single since his big breakthrough with Fingertips. (6)

496. The Supremes: “Always In My Heart”

June 23, 2012

This sounds wonderful, as well as being one of the Holland-Dozier-Holland trio’s most beautifully understated and underrated songs, a mediation on loss (or even bereavement) as powerful and dignified as anything pop music had done so far. If this was the sound of Motown “selling out”, I’m all for it. (8)

495. The Supremes: “Come See About Me”

June 20, 2012

All the ingredients are here, not just that beat, that sound, but the mixture of “up” music and “down” lyrics (sometimes up, sometimes down indeed!), the dichotomy of Diana’s cold, dispassionate steely glare and her broken, begging desperation, and the basic structure of beautiful verse, killer chorus. They’re all here, and – thanks to Nella Dodds – they’re all at Number One. (8)

494. The Marvelettes: “A Need For Love”

June 18, 2012

It’ll never be mistaken for a prime bit of classic Marvelettes, and it’s not in the same league as the A-side, but with these girls it’s always good to hear more – and in the absence of an album, well, it’s nice to catch up on what they’d been up to. (5)

493. The Marvelettes: “Too Many Fish In The Sea”

June 16, 2012

Probably the best-sounding Marvelettes single to date, certainly the most “grown up”, and – again – excellent. (8)

492. The Headliners: “You’re Bad News”

June 14, 2012

None of the individual elements of this (the song, the vocals, the band) is completely awful, just mediocre, but somehow when they’re all put together they amount to less than the sum of their parts. I’m not often physically worn out by trying to listen to a record turned up loud, but this one managed it, and I don’t particularly want to hear it again. Sorry, lads. (2)

491. The Headliners: “Tonight’s The Night”

June 12, 2012

Not completely terrible, it has its redeeming features, but if I find I’m impatiently waiting for a record to finish, then it’s not done it for me, I’m afraid. (3)

490. The Majestics: “The Further You Look, The Less You See”

June 10, 2012

It’s still a good song, and it still makes for a good record – but the existence of a better previous version means this is reduced to being a bit of a pointless do-over. (5)

489. The Majestics: “Hello Love”

June 8, 2012

Ultimately I think the good outweighs the bad, but it’s just so strange I can’t give in and love it. (6)

488. The Spinners: “How Can I”

June 2, 2012

All my complaints about this being slightly scruffy are really only minor niggles, and it’s really only the existence of a better version which diminishes this one for me, and there’s really only a small gap between the two versions… but it’s the same size as the small gap between “rather good” and “bleedin’ great”, and I can’t quite bridge it. (6)

Motown Junkies

This is Motown Junkies, an unofficial guide to every Motown single ever released, or planned for release, on every US Motown label (or via Tamla Motown in the UK), featuring reviews of each A-side and B-side in chronological order. New reviews appear every couple of days.

Think of it as an unauthorised track-by-track companion to the magnificent The Complete Motown Singles CD box sets, and beyond, with marks out of ten.

I'm NOT Paul Nixon.

FURTHER INFORMATION

More info about the blog (and me) can be found here. If you want to leave a comment on any review, please feel free to do so - all feedback, corrections, disagreements and encouragements gratefully received. If you've something you'd rather not say in public, I can be contacted at fosse8 at gmail dot com.

(Oh, and if you arrived here looking for the Motown Junkies music group, they're nothing to do with me, I'm afraid - but they are very nice people, and they can be found at www.motownjunkies.com instead.)

HOW TO USE THIS BLOG

You can jump straight to the full list of reviews so far in the Master Index, or browse by label instead.

If you're looking for something a bit more specific, you can click an artist's name in the "Artist" menu at the top of the screen to see a little biography and all the reviews we've done for them so far. Only people whose records I've already discussed appear there at the moment - more names will be added to the lists all the time as I work my way through Motown's history, so do keep checking back!

Alternatively, the front page displays excerpts from the most recent reviews, and on the right hand side of the screen you'll see a list of the most recent entries and also a sampling of the most popular entries from the last 48 hours, as well as the latest comments left by visitors.

Dive in, explore and have fun!
