Motown’s musical standards had risen dramatically in the 18 months or so since this was first cut, and by those increasingly rarefied and demanding standards, this rough-edged R&B scribble just wasn’t up to scratch any more. (4)

Much too rich a dessert for my tastes, but I find it difficult to dislike; it’s just so very, very nice, so determined for you to love it, like a puppy that won’t stop following you around until you pet it. (4)
Not awful or anything, but this is a relic from an age already past, and there was very much better to come. Try the A-side, for starters. (5)
A brilliant pop record, the best thing the Supremes had released since their long-forgotten début I Want A Guy almost three years previously. (9)
Beautiful and intriguing, and those are the last words I’d expected to be using to describe a long-forgotten Bobby Breen B-side. (7)
There are a few nice chord changes amid the MOR gloop, and Bobby is at least trying, so it’s not getting a 1 – but it’s still a pretty poor start, all told. (2)
